About length conversions
Length is one of the most commonly converted measurements, particularly between the metric system (millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers) used in most of the world, and the imperial and US customary systems (inches, feet, yards, miles) used primarily in the United States and, for some measurements, the United Kingdom.
The metric system is based on powers of ten, making conversions within the system straightforward. The imperial system uses historical units — one inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters, one foot equals 12 inches, and one mile equals 5,280 feet.
